SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — The George Washington girls basketball team knocked off Halifax County 54–45 in Piedmont District action Tuesday night.

Halifax (12–8, 6–6 Piedmont) faced a 46–33 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Comets switched things up a bit in the final frame, outscoring GW (10–9, 9–3) 12–8 to finish out strong. Senior Shamya Hankins led Halifax with six points in the quarter. Freshman Fadrianna Saunders and sophomore Joslyn Cobbs paced the Eagles with four points apiece in the fourth.

Cobbs led GW with a game-high 18 points while Saunders finished close behind with 14 and sophomore Saniyah Felton added 12 to give the Eagles three players in double-digit scoring.

Hankins led Halifax with 13 points while senior Jadyn Harlow added eight and sophomore Olivia Seamster chipped in with six. Juniors Malaysha Claiborne and Zylasia Morton added five apiece while senior Kamyria Woody-Giggetts chipped in with four.

GW got off to a hot start, outscoring the Comets 17–3 in the opening minutes to take the momentum on the road. Saunders led the Eagles with seven points while Cobbs finished close behind with five in the frame.

Halifax rebounded in the second, outscoring GW 12–11 in the frame to trim its deficit to 28–15 going into the break. Hankins led the Comets with three points while Woody-Giggetts, Harlow Seamster and senior Sara Diaz added two points apiece.

The two teams played neck-and-neck in the third quarter, finishing tied at 18–18 to make it a 46–33 contest going into the fourth. Morton led Halifax with five points in the frame while Hankins added three.

Halifax returns to action Friday when it takes on Bassett on the road at 7 p.m.

GW takes the court again Friday when it battles Patrick County on the road at 7 p.m.
