FERRUM — Averett University junior quarterback Bryce Jackson threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes to spear a late Averett rally against Ferrum College on Saturday but in the end, Ferrum held on for a 31–24 victory in the annual battle between the two rivals.

Few could have seen the exciting finish on the horizon as freshman Seth Deaton’s 26-yard field goal gave Ferrum (1–0) a 31–10 lead with 11:47 left in the game.
